There's more evidence when your parents stop buying surprise presents for you, but rather start saying when you're out shopping together the week or two before, "Don't buy that sweater for yourself. Your birthday is next week; I'll pay for it." And, having asked what else you'd like, they let you order your own birthday present, in this case issues of "Australian Smocking & Embroidery" magazine.
It's strange being in that gap where you are too old to get all excited over birthdays and too young to dread them. :)

I didn't know your birthday was in January! Great month to be born, if I do say so myself. :)
I don't know if you remember me, I'm a friend of the, well, I was going to say "Moss girls," but Hannah is the only offical Moss girl now, isn't she? :) I met you at a ball several years ago on a trip to West Virginia.
