With February being the 200th anniversary of Dickens' birth, I expected Masterpiece Theater would have wonderful plans to celebrate. And though I'm trying not to get too excited after the dismal season they had last year, I'm really looking forward to some of this year's productions. For instance:
Great Expectations is one of my favorite Dickens books, and I'm looking forward to seeing Gillian Anderson as Miss Havisham. IMDB has a listing for another new Great Expectations to come out in 2012 - starring Helena Bonham Carter. I'm torn over which I think will be better (though honestly, I don't follow these things closely enough to know the details of the productions). I'm leaning toward thinking that Helena Bonham Carter will be better in the role.
Masterpiece also has listed a new production of Dickens' incomplete mystery novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. I'm so glad Dickens is having a birthday! Having Dickens on the schedule keeps me from being disappointed that the main attraction this year seems to be the continuation of Downton Abbey. I haven't been able to decide how I feel about the content in that one, so I've avoided watching it for conscience sake - despite the beautiful costume shots I've seen.
Of course, I'll wait for the reviews to come out before viewing any of these movies, but it's fun to hope for good things in the meantime.
So who do you think will make a better Miss Havisham?

I think I prefer G.A. to H.B.C., but the movie *surrounding* the actress might make a difference, too.
